Arts Centre Washington has had a strong reputation for participatory arts since it was founded in 1977, and it plays a vital role in arts engagement in Sunderland.
It houses a 120 seat theatre, art gallery, rehearsal rooms, dance studios and recording studio and the facilities support a range of activities in different art forms. In recent years, the centre has gained a regional reputation for delivering a high quality, diverse arts programme for children and young people.
It can support young people with Arts Award in a number of ways, including cross-art classes, its young achievers award scheme, a community music space, Sunfest, Big Music Hub, Somewhereto, Youth Dance Hub for Sunderland, and North East Children’s Theatre. Each year the centre provides work experience
placements for students. Priority is given to Arts Award students.
