Arbeia Roman Fort is the most extensively excavated military supply base in the empire. The visible remains of the fort include the headquarter buildings, barracks, granaries, gateways and latrines. The collection of finds at Arbeia includes coins, imperial sealings, jewellery and military equipment. There is also a large collection of pottery and a rich collection of inscribed stones, altars and graffiti, referring to individual people and places as diverse as France, Spain and Syria. If this weren’t enough, three reconstructed Roman buildings are on site: the gateway, a barrack, and the commanding officer’s house.
Arbeia has Arts Award Advisers trained from Discover to Silver levels, all of whom can facilitate projects using exhibitions, workshops, tours and talks for all ages and abilities, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
