Susie Batey, Area Manager, South Tyneside, County Durham and Tees Valley
As Area Manager for South Tyneside, County Durham and Tees Valley, I help to connect schools and cultural organisations together through partnerships, collaborative working and information sharing. I lead on our Arts Award programme, working closely with The Customs House - our Arts Award strategic delivery partner.
My background is in senior leadership in primary education, and more recently production and strategy roles in the cultural sector. I taught for several years in the south east of England, and inner-city London. As a senior leader, I enjoyed working across large schools, and in communities which I found challenging and inspiring.
After moving back to the North East, I worked as Strategy and Evaluation Lead at Sage Gateshead, supporting business planning for multiple and complex music programmes. I also held roles within the Creative Learning department, and managed systems for data and evaluation. More recently I worked as Creative Producer at Helix Arts. I developed region-wide cultural programmes, where I enjoyed working with high quality artists and diverse communities, developing strategies for sustainability and business growth.
I grew up in the North East, and love living here. I love its diversity, its complexity, and its energy. I continue to be driven by education, social justice, and the impact of arts and culture on children, young people, and all those who work with them.
